The 11th International Conference on Informatics and Semiotics in Organisations, IFIP WG8.1 Working Conference (ICISO 2009), previously named International Conference on Organisational Semiotics (ICOS), is the eleventh in a series of international events devoted to the latest research in informatics and applications of Organisational Semiotics in organisations. The main theme on this occasion is: Information Systems in the changing era: theory and practice.

The ICISO 2009, supported by IFIP WG8.1, aims to provide a focal forum for active researchers, practitioners, business and industrial professionals and academics from diversified domains of information systems. They are able to share their latest research achievements and practical experiences, to exchange in-depth findings and innovative ideas, and in particular to harness the greatest challenges in the changing era and thinking seriously into the future.

The ICISO 2009 will also continue the effort of the international research community in the development of the emergent discipline in informatics and its applications. It will focus not only on theory building, but also on the practical benefits gained so far through applications of methods and techniques derived from various approaches.

Following previous workshops and conferences, some selected papers in five proceedings were also published in books within the Information and Organisation Design Series by Kluwer Academic Press. The first volume was entitled 'Information, Organisation, and Technology: studies in organisational semiotics' (Liu et al, 2001), which included selected papers from the 2nd workshop. The second volume was entitled 'Coordination and Communication using Signs' (Liu et al, 2002a), which included selected papers from the 3rd workshop. The third volume was entitled 'Organisational Semiotics : Evolving a Science of Information Systems' (Liu et al, 2002b), which included selected papers from the IFIP WG8.1 Working Conference. The fourth volume was entitled 'Virtual, Distributed and Flexible Organisations: studies in organisational semiotics' (Liu, 2004), which includes selected papers from the 6th workshop. The fifth volume was entitled 'Project Management and Risk Management in Complex Projects: studies in organisational semiotics' (Charrel, & Galarreta, 2007), which includes selected papers from the 8th workshop.
